Silver Leaf

WELCOME TO OUR GALLERY OF SILVER-LEAF GILDED  PLAQUES (STYLE CATEGORIES 1.2.13 , 1.2.14 & 1.2.15)

Welcome to our photo Gallery for our custom pure (0.99 fine) silver-leaf gilded plaques, where we show over 50 examples of various styles of these plaques. We design and fabricate hundreds of beautiful  custom 3-D bas-relief, 2.5-D flat relief and engraved  plaques and signs each year for courts, federal and state governments, universities, fraternities & sororities, schools, clubs, corporations,  and  homes which are decorated with silver leaf.  We often gild V-carved text, borders, and 3-D carved artwork, with the rest of the plaque painted (sometimes with black or metallic silver paint)  or metal-coated. We can gild wood (especially dark stained African Mahogany) as well as High-Density-Urethane (HDU) substrates. It is unusual but we can also gild the entire front surface of a 3-D bas-relief  plaque. Each  plaque is custom crafted  by our experienced  artisans who are experts in gilding silver, gold and copper leaf.. All our plaques are  moisture-proof, non-fading, and graffiti-resistant, and are given two final clear coats to minimize oxidation and tarnishing and to protect the surface from scratches.

Fig. 1 - This photo shows a wall plaque of the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNYAB) carved in 3-D bas-relief from High-Density-Urethane (HDU). The letters and artwork are gilded with pure silver leaf; the background is black paint which is hand-rubbed into the buffalo and wreath artwork to show texture better.

Silver is a chemical element with symbol Ag and atomic number 47. A soft, white, lustrous transition metal, it exhibits the highest electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and reflectivity of any metal. The metal is found in the Earth's crust in the pure, free elemental form ("native silver")ans as an alloy with gold and other metals. Silver has long been valued as a precious metal. Silver metal is used in many bullion coins, sometimes alongside gold:. As one of the seven metals of antiquity, silver has had an enduring role in most human cultures.

We gild by hand the surfaces of some areas of a plaque with pure (99.6%)  fine silver leaves, and then burnish the surface, in a manner very similar to that of gold leaf.  We can gild backgrounds,  V-carved engraved letters, borders and artwork  for either wood or HDU substrates, or we can gild the entire plaque. This technique is available for both 3-D bas-relief, 2.5-D flat-relief, and engraved plaques. An example of a silver gilded plaque in shown in Fig. 4 above, second plaque from the left.

This Gallery describes and shows a few  examples of our custom silver-leaf gilded plaques.  The prices for silver-leaf gilded plaques are given on the PRICE   page, listed under Style Categories 1.2.13, 1.2,14, and 1.2.15  for  several typical plaque sizes. Silver-leaf gilded 3-D bas-relief plaques have higher prices than 2.5-D flat relief or engraved plaques because of the additional labor and time to carve and hand-sand the High-Density-Urethane (HDU) substrate that is gilded with the silver leaf, and the additional labor required to apply silver leaf to  curved surfaces.  The larger the area gilded, the higher the price, to cover additional materials and labor costs. After an artisan polishes and burnishes the silver with a small hand tool, the entire plaque is clear coated twice. Silver leaf must be sealed with two coats of  Matthews polyurethane acrylic clear coat, or it will tarnish due to oxidation.
