This Photo Award Board for the US Navy Makin Island, LHD 8 is carved from Redwood. After carving, it is hand sanded and stained to get the required color. The board title and positions are carved raised above the background and painted black. The officers have photos inserted into slide-in 8 in x 10 in and 5 in x 7 in aluminum picture frames with acrylic covers, which can easily be changed-out. Under each photo frame is a holder that can slide in a replaceable brass plate engraved with the officer name and rank . Four small silver insignia / badges are carved in 3-D bas-relief. The ship's crest and Japanese emblem on top right are carved in 2.5-D multi-level and artist-painted using long-lasting sign enamels. This plaque is clear-coated twice to protect against the marine environment.
